SOUTH :: Editor's Letter
Summer 2016/17

It’s interesting how perceptions about small towns and rural areas have changed since semigration from cities has become such a large part of South African life.

Once considered the domain of mostly artists and retirees, regions such as ours car
ried an inadvertent association of lesser opportunities and lack of access, and by extension were perceived to be insufficient in facilitating talent and success.

While I believe that South in general proves this theory wrong all the time, in this edition we are showcasing seven people who have had international success in business, sport and design over the past year, and whose roots are deeply entrenched in the Southern Cape. We could have named many more and will continue to do so in future.

The people of the Southern Cape have character, tenacity and creativity – facilitated by an environment that prioritises people, quality of life and values. They want to make this work, here, and so they make a plan.

There are pros and cons to both city and country life, but the days of associating the Garden Route with ‘Outeniqua Rust’ and a lack of connection are nearing an end. While, thankfully, the pace is still slower down here, the quality of people and their work are not.

South is proud to be associated with the extraordinary people who call the Southern Cape home. We will continue to surprise the world with what the region has to offer.

May you have a blessed summer season on the Garden Route and an exceptional 2017.
