SOUTH :: Editor's Letter
Spring 2015

In recent times negativity by others has threatened to get me down. Facebook groups, newspaper letters to the editor and conversations
filled with frustration, bitterness, anger, fear, sarcasm and venom.
There is no doubt life is tough at times, a
uthorities fail and shops get it wrong. However, the enduring truth remains that our response to these setbacks will define our mood and long-term outlook on life.
This magazine aims to lift your spirits. Here we brag about ordinary people doing great things, selfless people improving the lives of others and locals making a living creating beautiful items for international admirers.
A world-respected athlete tells us how locals landed the ultimate trail run, and we list the many extraordinary things you can do in Mossel Bay – not to mention the rest of our soul-stirring stories.
We are exceptionally proud of our cover, which was specially designed and hand-painted by local artist Kirsty Hayward, and which embodies the abundant beauty and creativity of the Garden Route.
So, in the spirit of the biblical Paul I say: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things… practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Irrespective of which belief system you follow, the principle of mind-over-matter is universal.
The next time life gets you down, grab your South magazine and remind yourself why you live, work and play here. I do.
