African Hunting Events

By the time you read this editorial column I will already be back in South Africa. I am writing from our booth at the African Hunting Events (AHE) show in Calgary, Canada. We had a very successful show wit
h AHE in Edmonton and Calgary and we are confident that the one in Toronto will be just as good. I had meaningful discussions with Birgit Johnstone of AHE and African Outfitter is honoured to be associated with them. We have great plans for growth in 2015 and onwards – all to the benefit of our loyal advertisers and exhibitors, and of of course our readers and visitors to the shows.

African Outfitter was once again flattered by the compliments from loyal readers in the US and Canada. It is amazing how many people know our magazine and interesting to hear where they have seen it the first time – be it locally at the Firearms Permit Office at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa or at one of the many lodges scattered all over Africa, or internationally through readers passing on their copies to family and friends. While in Canada and the US, we had discussions with certain groups to distribute our magazine in their bookstores and it sounded very positive. With Birgit representing African Outfitter in the US and Canada, we are hoping to have our magazine on the shelves there within the next 12 months.

I have mentioned it before but it needs to be said again: I take my hat off to any person in the professional hunting industry. These men, and sometimes women, spend from six weeks to two months marketing their respective businesses overseas at the beginning of the year, often unable to witness their children going to school for the first time. They only return mid-February or the beginning of March, and then it is off to the bush for the first hunt – some hunt for more than 200 days a year! I have great respect for the women who stay behind at home, looking after the family and keeping it all together for great lengths of time.

To our South African readers: Don’t forget to visit us at Huntex 2014 at the end of April.

Greetings from a very cold US!
